Food handler course in Australia's main cities
Last updated: 22 October 2026
Short answer
Our food handler course is online, so it works the same in every city. The course and the exam are free; you pay A$19 (GST included) for the certificate only if you pass.
Not nationally recognised. It is food handler training with a certificate of completion, not a food safety supervisor certificate.
Since December 2023, Standard 3.2.2A has required each food handler who handles unpackaged, potentially hazardous food that is ready to eat to have completed a food safety training course, or to have adequate skills and knowledge in food safety and hygiene, before doing that work.[1]
The training rules are the same across Australia. What changes from one place to another is how a food business registers and who inspects it. Choose your city to see how it works there.
