The 5 modules

Print the syllabus
  1. 01

The law and the hazards of abrasive wheels

Abrasive wheels are used for grinding, cutting and finishing on bench grinders, angle grinders and cut-off saws.

  2. 02

Types of wheels and their markings

Using the right wheel for the machine and the job is the first defence against breakage.

  3. 03

    Storage, handling and inspection

Wheels can be damaged long before they are mounted: dropped, stored badly or exposed to damp.

  4. 04

    Mounting and safe use

Correct mounting and safe working habits prevent most abrasive wheel accidents.

  5. 05

    Practical assessment: your inspection video

To finish, you show that you can carry out the pre-use checks and the mounting steps safely.

Course content based on the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and HSE guidance HSG17.

The practical assessment

To finish, you upload a short video of you checking a wheel and the grinder before use, with the machine unplugged, straight from your phone in the last module, or send a link to it on YouTube, Google Drive or Dropbox. The course assessment team checks it against the points taught in the course and either passes it or tells you what to practise, and you can send another video at no extra cost. You get your certificate once both the final test and the video pass. An uploaded video is private and deleted 90 days after it is reviewed.

The final test

  • 15 multiple-choice questions
  • Pass with 11 correct answers (73%)
  • 20 minutes
  • Unlocks once you have completed all 5 modules
