The 5 modules

  1. 01

Why manual handling matters, and the law

Manual handling means lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving a load by hand or with bodily force.

  2. 02

Your back and how injuries happen

Knowing how your spine works makes it easier to understand why some movements are risky.

  3. 03

Assessing the risk: task, individual, load and environment

Before any lift, stop and think. A quick check of four things tells you whether it is safe and what would make it safer.

  4. 04

Safe handling technique and handling aids

When a lift cannot be avoided, good technique lowers the strain on your body.

  5. 05

    Practical assessment: your lifting video

To finish the course, you show that you can put what you have learned into practice.

Course content based on the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and guidance from the Health and Safety Executive.

The practical assessment

To finish, you upload a 1 to 2 minute video of you assessing a load and making a safe lift, straight from your phone in the last module, or send a link to it on YouTube, Google Drive or Dropbox. The course assessment team checks it against the points taught in the course and either passes it or tells you what to practise, and you can send another video at no extra cost. You get your certificate once both the final test and the video pass. An uploaded video is private and deleted 90 days after it is reviewed.

The final test

  • 20 multiple-choice questions
  • Pass with 14 correct answers (70%)
  • 30 minutes
  • Unlocks once you have completed all 5 modules
